FBSC messengers applaud pastors who have served 60-plus years

PENSACOLA (FBW)–The Florida Baptist State Convention, in the Monday evening session of its annual meeting, honored pastors who have served more than 60 years in the ministry. Five ministers were introduced from the podium to a standing ovation from messengers and guests:

*O.E. Boals, 96, pastor of Riverside Baptist Church in Branford, has served as pastor 78 years in central and north Florida.

*Aurelio Travieso, associate pastor of New Jerusalem Baptist Church in Hialeah, served the historic Calvary Baptist Church in Havana, Cuba, before immigrating to the U.S. in 1960.

*Roy Jerrell, ordained in 1946, now serves as interim pastor of First Baptist Church in Interlachen, his 14th interim.

*Manning Hicks, pastor of First Baptist Church in Cherry Lake in Madison, served as director of missions in the Middle Florida Baptist Association, and as pastor of several churches in his 64-year career.

*Gene Hodges, 87, interim pastor of Springfield Baptist Church in Panama City, began preaching in 1947, when he was a student at Baptist Bible Institute in Lakeland.

Each of the honored pastors received a crystal cross on a base engraved “Soldier of the Cross.”

State Convention President John Cross said in presenting the awards, “I challenge those who follow in their footsteps to be faithful to God’s calling.”
