MARIEL, Cuba (FBC)—The youngsters perched on a wall overlooking the azure waters of Mariel Bay, Cuba, playfully listened to their teacher tell of Jesus’ promise to Peter, “I will make you fishers of men.” As if on cue, a sun weathered fisherman passed along the harbor, pushing a rugged wheelbarrow brimming with fishing nets, illustrating the claims of Christ and the persistence of men and women in the Western Cuba Baptist Convention.

Services provided by Florida Baptist mobile dental unit
JACKONVILLE (FBC)—An unemployed health educator who recognized the importance of dental care but had no insurance and little money for needed dental treatment stopped by the Mobile Dental Clinic earlier this year at Lake Shore Baptist Church in Jacksonville.
The woman not only received free dental care but she was “overwhelmed by the warmth and generosity” demonstrated by the clinic staff.

HAITI (FBC)—After the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Frankel Gabriel, his pregnant girlfriend and sons lived under a makeshift tent in Gressier for months before Pastor Octavien Henriquez discovered their misery on a tropical raining night.
“We shared the Gospel with them, telling them that Jesus loves them,” Henriquez recalled. “We asked them if they believed Jesus can do miracles. ‘Yes,’ they replied.”

Storm nudged growth of now flourishing South Florida ethnic ministries
MIAMI (FBC)—Carolyn McAdams wept as she walked into the sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Cutler Ridge 20 years ago. Though the walls were still standing, the ceiling had caved in, insulation hung in chunks, and several inches of water stood on the floor.
“This is the only church I have attended since I was a child,” she cried. “My home is gone, my car is gone and I’ve lost my church.”
