The State Board of Missions honored Nancy and me with a dinner and reception on Thursday night, Feb. 6 to celebrate our 25th year serving Florida Baptists. It was a wonderful event. Many worked hard in planning and executing the time together.

The Florida Baptist State Convention meeting last month hosted by North Jacksonville Baptist Church was a wonderful and exceptional experience for Florida Baptists.

I love conventions! Always have. It has been my joy across these years of ministry to attend a multitude of conventions, including the Southern Baptist Convention, Florida Baptist State Convention, associational annual meetings; and at least twice, the National Association of Parliamentarians National Convention (those were interesting!).

It is an inescapable fact that the product of the future will be cut from the material of today. Tomorrow soon will be yesterday and what was our future will have become our past. We cannot ignore history’s impact on the present and get mobilized for the future. We must learn from decisions that have negated our influence on others and minimized our spiritual growth.

For a 24-hour period, from Sept. 30-Oct. 1, senior pastors from across the Southern Baptist Convention will gather for prayer for revival and awakening in Southlake, Texas, just outside of Dallas.

You do not have to be around Southern Baptists long until someone will interject, “We must support our missionaries.” I agree.
Recently however, the unspoken or under-spoken insinuation is that our missionaries are not being fully supported because Cooperative Program dollars are being spent in other places. In the minds of some, state conventions have especially come under suspicion for diverting such support.

In a meditative moment, I began to reflect on some recent venues of spiritual value outside my normal patterns of life.
It was my joy to attend the Pastors’ Conference at the First Baptist Church in Jacksonville in late January. It was a wonderful conference. I have attended many times in past years, however, as I took the time to walk through the exhibit area, it dawned on me the many ministries and helps that are now available to preachers and churches. I was amazed at the presentations, especially the amount of biblical materials available on computer.
