Breaking up is hard to do, no matter the circumstances. And I dislike telling people goodbye over the phone or in print. I’d rather say it in person. But that’s not always possible. So here goes.

Farewell—until we meet again some day. I hope we don’t wait until we are on the streets of gold, but if so, that will have to do.

One of our heroes came to town the other day.

Steven Curtis Chapman, a “young man” whose music has been with my husband and me since our 20s—rocked into Florida last month with his “Glorious Unfolding Tour” and delighted an audience I was gratified to see.

David Uth, pastor of First Baptist Church in Orlando, at lunch on the field with an international missionary, listened as the man began to weep when speaking of trying to reach 65 million people with a budget of $3,500.

I love to tell stories. To get into the heart and soul of what motivates the subjects about which I write. To help the reader “be there” and see what I see–feel what I feel.

That’s why when I write first person I put on a whole new set of eyeglasses—my own. And it can be hard to do. I want to be transparent, but I weigh every word.

TALLAHASSEE (FBW)—For more than 18 years Florida Baptists have relied on the quiet, but forceful influence of Bill Bunkley, the former legislative consultant for the Florida Baptist Convention, to stay in touch with the critical issues and powerbrokers in Tallahassee to learn about legislation that could impact religious liberty.

Bunkley is still going about that task—but has reorganized efforts in an attempt to more effectively utilize the limited resources he now receives from the Florida Baptist Convention for a new, separate ministry he began two years ago—the Florida Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission.

Elliff, who turned 70 just last week, was unanimously elected to the post three years ago in Dallas.

MIAMI (FBW)—Liberty Counsel Feb. 25 filed a motion to intervene in a lawsuit initiated by homosexual activists who are seeking to declare Florida’s marriage laws unconstitutional. The international, non-profit organization advocating religious freedom—Liberty Council is representing a diverse coalition of citizen groups.

Florida Family Action—a separate sister organization to Florida Family Policy Council—successfully led a 2008 grassroots ballot effort to defend the traditional definition of marriage.

GAINESVILLE (FBW)—In the heart of Florida’s Gator territory, Westside Baptist Church in Gainesville celebrated 50 years of growth in a month-long series of celebrations ending Jan. 26.

“Welcome beloved,” Gary Crawford, senior pastor since 1981, told the congregation. “We’ve waited 50 years for this service and we’re glad to be here.”
