JACKSONVILLE (FBC)—According to a report released by the Florida Baptist Convention’s Church Planting Group, Florida Baptist started nine new churches during April. The following is a listing of new churches by association:

JACKSONVILLE (FLBaptist)—A Committee on Nominations composed of 20 pastors, 24 laypersons and a church staff member has been appointed by the officers of the Florida Baptist State Convention to serve for 2014. James Locke, pastor of Hillcrest Baptist Church in Pensacola, was named to chair the 49-member committee. Justin Kirksey, pastor of Madison Street Baptist Church in Starke, was named vice chairman.

The committee is composed of one member from each of the 49 associations in the state, plus three FBSC officers who serve as ex officio members, and is responsible for nominating Florida Baptists to serve on FBSC boards and committees. Their nominations must be approved by messengers to FBSC annual meeting Nov. 10-11 in Lakeland.

Hilda Johnson, long-time first lady at First Baptist Church of Ocala, died May 21 in Newport News, Va.

Johnson was the wife of Ed Johnson, who served as pastor of First Ocala from 1983 to 2006, and as director of the Florida Baptist Convention’s Cooperative Program Department from 2006 until 2010. He also served as president of the Florida Baptist Convention in 1992, and president of the state Board of Missions in 1999.

TALLAHASSEE (FLBaptist)—Theological education along the I-10 corridor just became more convenient for ministry students in North Florida with the establishment of a New Orleans Theological Seminary extension center in Tallahassee, just minutes from the interstate highway.

The extension site, part of the Florida Baptist Convention’s network of theological education in the state, will move from Graceville to Tallahassee’s Thomasville Road Baptist Church with classes beginning this fall.

MARIANNA (FLBaptist)—Senior adults living in the Panhandle are invited to “Senior Life,” a retreat to be held at Blue Springs Baptist Conference Center in Marianna June 16-18. The event, titled Music, Ministry and More, will be similar to a retreat at Lake Yale Conference Center in February that attracted 400.

RIDGECREST, NC (FLBaptist)—The Florida Baptist Convention’s Public Relations/Missions Promotion received five awards for their work, including the Grand Prize Arthur S. Davenport Award in Public Relations, during the Wilmer C. Fields Awards competition.

The awards were announced during the annual Baptist Communicators Association meeting April 11 at Ridgecrest Baptist Conference Center.
