Reader thankful for article bringing awareness to organ donation
I just wanted to commend Carolyn Nichols on the outstanding article that she wrote in the May 22 issue of the Florida Baptist Witness regarding organ donation, “Pastor reveals value of a promise kept.” What a wonderful story.
I have direct experience with organ donation as my youngest son received a liver transplant in 2009 at Egleston Children’s Hospital in Atlanta at the age of 20 and most recently my grandson, Silas Huffman, received a heart transplant in December 2013 at the same hospital when he was 6½ months old.
You may have heard the story about my grandson because he is the youngest child of Chris Huffman, bass player for the Christian rock band Casting Crowns. I never imagined that I would have a son and grandson that needed life-saving transplants. Our strong faith in God was the only thing that sustained us all through these journeys. We have had the opportunity to impact so many lives through our experiences. My daughter said that this whole experience has put her out of her comfort zone. I told her that God has given her a ministry and she certainly has answered the call and has helped so many mothers experiencing similar circumstances. I always told her and reminded myself that God is good all of the time, no matter the outcome.
We just celebrated five years post-transplant for my son and six months for my grandson. Both are doing great.
Thank you for bringing awareness to such a wonderful way to impact someone’s else’s life by being an organ donor.
