Pastors' work hours tallied in new survey

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)-Protestant pastors in America are working long hours, sometimes at the expense of relationships with church members, prospects, family and even the Lord, according to a LifeWay Research study released Jan. 5.

Hope grows from Haiti’s ruins

PORT-AU-PRINCE (FBC)-Nearly a month after an earthquake ravaged the Port-au-Prince region of Haiti leaving 200,000 dead, stories of anguish and hope are rising from the rubble.

A weary, hungry and thirsty Daniel Cadichon arrived at the Confraternite Missionaire Baptiste d’Haiti’s mission house in Port-au-Prince Feb. 3. The high-ranking police official had not been paid since the Jan. 12 earthquake.

Haiti Day of Prayer video released

JACKSONVILLE (FBW) - The Florida Baptist Convention has released a new video to help churches to observe the Feb. 14 Day of Prayer for Haiti.

The Day of Prayer was declared by John Sullivan, executive director-treasurer of the Florida Baptist Convention, on Feb. 2, calling on “the collected voices of Southern Baptists to pray for the hurting people of Haiti as they try to recover from one of the most devastating disasters in the Western Hemisphere.”

Bobby Bowden in Tampa for Super Sunday

LUTZ (FBW)- Former Florida State University (FSU) Head Football Coach Bobby Bowden unashamedly professed his faith in Jesus Christ to a crowd of nearly 10,000 during morning services at Idlewild Baptist Church in Lutz Feb. 7 on Super Bowl Sunday.

The second most winningest college football head coach in history gave the congregation the same advice he gave his assistant coaches at FSU upon his retirement after the Gator Bowl in January. He told them never to be afraid to speak out for Christ.

Near Tampa, the sight of last year's Super Bowl and where fellow Baptist and coaching legend Tony Dungy retired after his coaching career, Bowden said as a young boy, he walked forward during an invitation and joined a Baptist church.

Church compensation survey now online

DALLAS (BP)—The 2010 SBC Church Compensation Survey, a joint effort of Baptist state conventions, LifeWay Christian Resources and GuideStone Financial Resources, is now online.

Philippians 3:2-15; 4:8: February 14- What will it take to change your mind?

You may have heard the story about the woman whose favorite pet died. She brought it to the local pastor to ask if he could give the dog a proper burial. He answered somewhat snootily, that he wasn’t accustomed to having formal rites for an animal. She picked up her dead pet and then remarked she intended to donate a new church bus in honor of the dog. The pastor remarked, “My goodness! Why didn’t you say that was a Baptist dog?”

Mark 13:9-13, 21-27, 32-37: February 14 - Preparing for the future

Priorities are a key to life. Without priorities, an individual drifts aimlessly. Not only do priorities allow us to follow and reach a God-given vision, priorities produce a balanced life. In one of his letters, C. S. Lewis wrote: “Put first things first and we get second things thrown in: Put second things first and we lose both first and second things.” In addition, priorities reveal character, or perhaps, I should say living by priorities reveals character. When an individual faces tough decisions, established priorities prevents panic, despair, and anxiety. As situations arise, base your decisions on pre-chosen priorities.

Lauren Dungy says children supportive of 'Coach,' but grateful for 'full-time dad'

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (FBW)--When NFL Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy announced his retirement in 2009, two years after leading his team to the Super Bowl XLI Championship in Miami, Lauren Dungy was ready to welcome him home in Tampa.

Michael Oher talks football, 'Blind Side'

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (FBW)--Michael Oher, offensive tackle for the Baltimore Ravens, missed out on earning the NFL's top honor for a rookie, but he made a pitch that Sandra Bullock should win the Oscar for playing the part of his adoptive mother, Leigh Ann Tuohy, in "The Blind Side."

Pastor proud of Garçon's relief efforts

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (FBW)--There is pride in Pastor Moralas St. Hilaire's voice when he talks about Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Pierre Garçon.
