Have camper will travel for the Lord
Jun 30, 2009

JACKSONVILLE (FBC)—‘Have camper will travel for the Lord’ could be the motto for the Florida Baptist Campers on Mission. Offering a friendly face at a campground or a helping hand after a devastating storm, these volunteers take to the road to share the Gospel by conducting outreach events, volunteering and befriending fellow travelers.

“Members of Campers on Mission are folks who have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, who love to travel, and who have hearts to serve,” said David Cornish, State Wagon Master for Florida’s Campers on Mission.

Sponsored by the Adult Mobilization Unit of the North American Mission Board, Campers on Mission is comprised of 29 chapters, with members in 37 states across the country. Florida’s chapter of Campers on Mission is divided into nine regions, each with a Wagon Master to oversee and organize events.

The predominantly senior adult campers serve in a variety of roles as they minister across the country, including working on construction projects; volunteering in fairs and festivals; helping with Vacation Bible School; holding backyard Bible studies; and serving in clown, raceway and seafarers’ ministries.

Last year, 121 members of the Florida chapter drove more than 150,000 miles and donated 36,014 volunteer hours, participating in 138 different service projects, including 15 local fairs, 31 construction projects and six days at disaster relief sites. As a result of their ministry, 471 persons made professions of faith and numerous other spiritual decisions.

This summer Florida’s Campers on Mission has groups working in the Sunshine State on church construction projects in Ponce De Leon and Mayo. Out of state, Florida’s groups are working across the Southeast including multiple projects in Alabama. Camper volunteers recently completed a remodeling project at Madrid Baptist Church in Madrid, Ala.

“Plans for the coming months include other construction projects in Florida and other states; serving on the staff or as laborers in summer youth camps; and numerous other service projects around the country,” said Cornish. “We have also been deeply involved in the North, Central and South Florida fairs and the Strawberry Festival for many years.”

Florida Campers on Mission holds an annual State Rally and celebrates the service of long-time members. Twenty-six members were recognized at the meeting earlier this year. The next meeting of the Florida Campers on Mission is Sept. 30—Oct. 2 at the KOA Park in Okeechobee. Persons interested in participating with the group can go online to www.flcampersonmission.org.
