Chaplaincy in South Florida reached a benchmark recently after chaplaincy training in May led by Marc Johnston, director of the Church and Community Ministries Department of the Florida Baptist Convention. After nine years of annual training, volunteer chaplains now number more than 100.
The most recent training session was attended by 38 volunteers coming to West Palm Beach from cities “from Ft. Pierce to Miami,” said Ray Henry, pastor of Belvedere Baptist Church in West Palm Beach. Chaplains’ Services of the Palm Beaches was organized in 1995 as a ministry of Belvedere Baptist, and was the focus of the first training led by Florida Baptist Convention’s Larry Elliot in 2001.
Chaplains trained in the annual sessions now work in assisted living and rehabilitation facilities, condominiums and jails. Chaplains also ride with Palm Beach County deputies, Henry said.
“As a pastor, I can’t go into these places except to see church members, but they love to have chaplains there,” he said. “It is an open door for ministry.”
