Oct 8, 2009

A chartered bus carrying 32 south Florida Baptist senior adults was involved in a 19-car pile-up on I-75 Sept. 27. Although some were hurt in other vehicles, no one on the charter bus was injured.

According to Sue Smith from Citrus Park Baptist Church in Tampa, a passenger in the bus, the seniors’ bus was hit by at least two cars in the accident that happened mid- afternoon as “ballgame traffic” was heavy and a light rain was falling.

Several members of First Baptist Church in Sarasota, including Pastor Bill Hild, were also on the bus. According to Tampa Tribune reports, the northbound lanes of I-75 at State Road 60 were closed about three hours.

The seniors were en route to Gatlinburg, Tenn., to attend Johnny Hunt’s annual Jubilee, she said. Hunt, pastor of First Baptist Church in Woodstock, Ga., is president of the Southern Baptist Convention. After boarding a replacement vehicle, the group continued traveling to Tennessee.
