GRACEVILLE (BCF)–Trustees at The Baptist College of Florida met Oct. 8-9 and received a favorable report from a Special Study Committee about operations, affirmed previous plans to authorize a graduate school, and considered other reports and actions.

The report from the Special Study Committee about the institution’s operations was the result of a recommendation the board approved in May made by BCF president Thomas Kinchen to consider the operations of the college in response to the Southern Baptist Convention’s interest in a Great Commission resurgence. The scope of the report was to look at the “structure, funding and operation of the college,” according to the report.

Board Chairman Larry Taylor, an attorney from Leesburg and a member of First Baptist Church in Leesburg, appointed the Executive Committee of BCF’s Board of Trustees to carry out the study. The Committee conducted a four and one-half hour meeting with the executive leadership of the College and after “open and beneficial” discussions, a special report was drafted for the entire board, according to a news release.

The Report from the Special Study Committee stated in part:

“At the conclusion of the meeting the Executive Committee agreed that the operation of The Baptist College of Florida is being carried out in a highly professional and responsible manner. Solid stewardship is being displayed in the handling of resources. The Committee expressed appreciation for the work of the College administration, faculty and staff. Further the Committee expresses to the entire Board of Trustees of The Baptist College of Florida every confidence that the operation of the College is being carried out in a manner that honors our Lord and serves Florida Baptists.”

In 2001 the Board of Trustees approved a recommendation for the establishment of a graduate school at the college. At the time that the original plan was in process through the college’s accrediting agency, the school was in the process of reaffirmation of its accreditation at the undergraduate level.

The Commission on Colleges suggested that the College postpone its graduate plans until after the reaffirmation at the undergraduate level was completed. With the reaffirmation of its undergraduate program successfully completed, BCF returned to its plan for accreditation at the higher level. All of the work required by the accrediting agency and the Commission for Independent Education of the Florida Department of Education has been submitted, according to Kinchen, and the college is awaiting notification of the action of its accrediting agency in December 2009, Kinchen said because a number of years has gone by since the process began for approval and accreditation, he thought it would be appropriate to ask the current board to review the proposal and vote on it.

“I am delighted that the Board was unanimously and enthusiastically in favor of the action,” Kinchen said.

In other actions, the board received reports on the completion of several construction projects and the beginning of construction of the new Mills Center for Missions and Evangelism, which is scheduled to be open for operation in the Fall semester of 2010.
