ORLANDO (FBW)—Florida Baptist State Convention president John Cross told Florida Baptist Witness Dec. 3 that Danny de Armas, 47, executive pastor of First Baptist Church in Orlando, will serve as chairman of the “Imagine If ... Great Commission Task Force.”
The task force’s first meeting is set for Dec. 14 in Orlando, although that date was pending confirmation from members that at least a quorum would be available.
Messengers to the Florida Baptist State Convention annual meeting voted Nov. 10 to affirm Cross’ vision to create a task force he said will look at how Florida Baptists can more effectively fulfill the Great Commission.
Cross, pastor of South Biscayne Church in North Port, named 31 persons to the task force, including himself, during the evening session of the annual meeting. Members of the task force include two past presidents of the Florida Baptist State Convention, pastors, laypersons, director of missions and an evangelist (see list of Task Force members in the Nov. 19 issue of the Witness).
In an e-mail statement to the Witness, Cross announced de Armas as the task force chairman, and said he is “very excited” his friend of 15 years agreed to serve as chairman of the task force.
A graduate of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, de Armas has served at First Baptist Orlando for 18 months and previously served other ministries and was on staff at First Baptist Church in New Port Richey 1986-87.
“I believe he is God’s man for this time to help lead us as Florida Baptists to study how we may be more effective and efficient in fulfilling the Great Commission,” Cross said.
Calling de Armas a “great leader and organizer,” Cross said the Orlando pastor understands how the Florida Baptist State Convention and Southern Baptist Convention work.
“Danny is a life-long Florida Baptist. His dad and father-in-law are missional Florida Baptist pastors who’ve served for decades in this great state,” Cross said. “His heart beats to see people come into an eternal relationship with Christ. His wisdom and Christ-like spirit will serve us well as we ‘Imagine if!’”
