JACKSONVILLE (FBW) – Leaders of the three search committees currently seeking new presidents for key Southern Baptist Convention entities aren’t willing to say much about their work – except they all desire prayer from Southern Baptists.
SBC President Johnny Hunt cited the presidential searches for the Executive Committee, North American Mission Board and International Mission Board as one of the needs Southern Baptists should give focus to in calling for a Jan. 31 denomination-wide Day of Prayer for the SBC.
Florida Baptist Witness contacted Floridians serving on each of the committees – two as chairman – to ask about the search process of each in order to help Southern Baptists know how they can more effectively pray for the search committees.
Randall James, chairman of the Executive Committee trustees and of its presidential search committee, was very reluctant to speak at all about the search process.
The associate pastor of First Baptist Church in Orlando confirmed that the period of nominations is now closed.
“We are praying and diligently engaged in seeking the person Jesus has already named,” James said, requesting Southern Baptists to pray for the committee’s work.
James was unwilling to comment further.
Morris Chapman, who has served since 1992, is scheduled to step down as EC president at the end of September. He announced his retirement plans last September.
Ted Traylor, pastor of Olive Baptist Church in Pensacola and chairman of the North American Mission Board presidential search, told the Witness his committee closed nominations Jan. 1.
Geoff Hammond was forced by trustees to resign as NAMB president in August.
“We are currently working on a [presidential] profile. We want to hear what comes out of the GCR report before we get too far into the process,” he said. “If NAMB is given a new focus we certainly want to be right on target with it.”
Traylor is a member of the Great Commission Resurgence Task Force (GCRTF) currently studying how the SBC can be more effective in fulfilling the Great Commission. Hunt also requested prayer for the GCRTF in his Day of Prayer call.
