TALLAHASSEE (FBW)–Florida Governor Charlie Crist recently named Ken Scubbs of Fruitland Park as a Governor’s Point of Light for Black History Month.

Scrubbs is director of Genesis Youth Center, a community outreach ministry of Christian Care Inc., a ministry arm of First Baptist Church in Leesburg.

A news release from Crist's office said Scrubbs has been an integral part of helping at-risk youth in central Florida.

"Through tutoring, mentoring and counseling at youth ministries, Ken is committed to keeping at risk youth on a responsible path," Crist said in the release.

Cliff Lea, pastor of First Baptist Church in Leesburg, agreed with the governor’s assessment.

“It blows my mind to see all that Ken is involved in at the Genesis Center. The kids there are learning life skills and hearing the Gospel,” Lea said. “We are very blessed and grateful to have him on our staff."

Lea said Scrubbs preaches for the congregation on Wednesday nights and sometimes on Sundays, and is always well-received. Members of the congregation are thrilled that Scrubbs has been honored by the governor, he said.

In addition to his work with Genesis Youth Center, Scrubbs has been an active participant in public policy discussion, having served on the governor’s Faith-Based Advisory Board, the 2007 Florida Drop-Out Prevention Task Force, and Florida Attorney General’s Conference on Preventing Crime in the Black Community, when Governor Crist was attorney general.  Governor Crist also appointed him to the Florida Disaster Recovery Fund Advisory Council in 2007.
