MIAMI (FBW)–In an effort to provide a million tents for Haiti, the 350 churches of the Miami Baptist Association have joined with over 2,000 other evangelical churches in Miami and churches and Baptist associations from Tennessee and New York City.
“The Million Tent Campaign,” in cooperation with the Miami Dade County Commissioners and the Miami-Dade County Office of the Mayor, is collecting donations to purchase tents and camping gear such as cots, flashlights, netting, propane stoves and water purification systems to assist in the intermediate needs of the estimated millions of Haitians displaced from their homes by a Jan. 12 massive earthquake.
“This type of effort crosses all races, languages, and religion,” the campaign’s website www.tenthaiti.com reads. “We want to encourage everyone to take their part in helping out Haitian friends and families.”
Scott Nelson, director of Haitian Ministries for the Miami association, said the need for the tents mounts as the Spring rainy season looms, and Haitians continue to sleep outside in fear of aftershocks.
“I haven’t talked with anyone in Haiti who is not begging for tents,” Nelson told the Witnesss. “We still need a lot more tents.”
As of Feb. 22, the Miami Baptist Association has collected 1,000 tents.
The four-person tents may be purchased and shipped to Haiti for $50, although the association continues to talk with distributors of the tents to negotiate lower prices, Nelson said. He said he hopes Florida Baptists will clear their garages of unused tents to send to those in desperate need of housing. He anticipates Haiti residents will use the tents for up to two years, as they await massive rebuilding efforts.
Meanwhile the donation of tents in Florida and the donation in Haiti of a 24-ft box truck to facilitate tent distribution encouraged leaders.
“It’s exciting to see what God can do,” Nelson said.
