JACKSONVILLE (FBW)—After preaching at the Jacksonville Baptist Association annual meeting Sept. 30 at Fruit Cove Baptist Church, Southern Baptist Convention President Fred Luter gathered with JBA pastors and leaders from the Florida Baptist State Convention for an hour of prayer at the JBA headquarters Oct. 1.
Preaching first from Philippians, Luter said prayer needs to be “personal, on purpose, and passionate.”
“We need to have the same passion when calling on God as when we are laughing at the Snake King or Duck Dynasty,” Luter said.
Luter urged those in attendance to pray for their families, their churches, and for the SBC. He asked for prayer for unity in the SBC, saying that “Calvinism,” “Boy Scouts” and “minister debates” should not divide Southern Baptists—and that they need to be known for “missions and discipleship.”
“Pray for our nation,” Luter urged. “We are in trouble in America. Pray personally, purposefully and passionately.”
Rick Shepherd, team strategist for the prayer and spiritual awakening team of the Florida Baptist Convention, led about 75 to break into groups and pray through directed times of prayer.
