LEESBURG (FBW)—First Baptist Church in Leesburg, like many churches across the Sunshine State, scrambled to meet the needs of local residents and transients Jan. 6-9 when temperatures dipped below freezing.

Giving away coats and sweaters in its Thrift Store, the church opened its Benevolence building overnight, Executive Pastor Art Ayris told members in an email.

Ayris’ e-mail also asked the congregation to donate blankets and pillows for those who have “protection needs” in the cold weather. He said the church is looking into some other options for times when it gets bitterly cold.
