Former Army chaplain, Florida Baptist pastor, dies at 51

LAND O’ LAKES (FBW)-Richard Huey Bratton Jr., associate pastor and worship leader of Myrtle Lake Baptist Church in Land O’ Lakes, died suddenly Feb. 7. He was 51.

Bratton previously served as pastor of Crosspoint Baptist Church in St. Augustine, a mission of Fruit Cove Baptist Church in Jacksonville; and as associate pastor of family life and youth at First Baptist Church in Richmond Hill, Ga.

He served as chaplain for the 3rd Infantry Division out of Fort Stewart, Ga., during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 1993, and earned the Bronze Star during combat. Bratton recounted his war experience in an article in the Florida Baptist Witness in 2004.

Bratton was a member of the Florida Baptist Worship Choir and Orchestra.

He is survived by his wife, Cindy; a son, Luke; and his parents, Richard and Olean Bratton.

Funeral services will be held at Myrtle Lake Baptist Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Tim Maynard, pastor of Fruit Cove Baptist Church, and David Shenning, worship pastor of First Baptist Church in Brandon, will lead the service. Burial will be at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell Feb. 12 at 10 a.m.
