LOS ANGELES (FBW)—Grossing $26.5 million at the box office on opening weekend, “Son of God,” a movie about the life of Christ that was drawn from the mini series “The Bible,” garnered positive reviews last month when it opened around the country.

The movie, released Feb. 28, continued to draw audiences its second weekend, raking in another $10 million, to make it the No. 2 movie in the country behind “Non-Stop,” according to Box Office Mojo.

Producers Roma Downey and Mark Burnett made appearances throughout the country before the movie’s release, meeting with church leaders and others.

Burnett said bringing the full story of Jesus' teaching and ministry to the big screen—the first time it's been done by a major Hollywood studio in more than 50 years—is long overdue.

“Now people can bring their family, friends and neighbors to experience together the incredible story of Jesus,” Downey said. “We pray this film will really spread the word about Jesus' love and sacrifice for all of us.”

The couple said they hope the movie draws generations of people closer to Jesus.

“We don't want the experience to end for audiences when the credits roll,” Burnett said. “There is so much to learn from and apply to our everyday lives in the things Jesus did and said. So the companion study is essential for congregations to dig deeper into the life lessons of Jesus' ministry.”

In the film, Lisbon-born Diogo Morgado portrays Jesus’ life from His humble birth through His teachings, crucifixion and resurrection.

Inspired by the success of the TV mini series “The Bible,” which drew more than 100 million visitors to the History Channel, “Son of God” features never-before-seen footage, a theatrical edit, and a 5.1 surround sound mix that adds to the immediacy of the experience.

This movie brought leaders together from across all denominations, according to a news release.

Rick Warren, pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif., anticipated the film in advance of its release.

“I’ve seen most of the films about Jesus produced in the past 50 years. “Son of God” stands alone, in a class by itself. It is a powerful and poignant movie, the best Jesus movie I have ever seen,” Warren said in a release.

Warren partnered with LifeWay Christian Resources to release a Bible study for “Son of God.”

“Son of God: The Life of Jesus in You” is a DVD small group Bible study that features Warren explaining how you can find your purpose in studying the life of Jesus. The study is available at LifeWay Stores and LifeWay.com/SonofGod.

“There's nothing more important you can do with your life than spending time getting to know Jesus,” said Warren.

The six-session study features video clips from the theatrical movie “Son of God” and videos from Warren explaining Jesus' teachings and their impact on people's lives. Topics include baptism, temptation, suffering, death, resurrection and ministry. Scenes from the movie, such as Jesus being baptized by John the Baptist, will help illustrate each topic.
