JACKSONVILLE (FBW)—Willy Rice, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Clearwater, Fla., is going to be nominated as president of the Pastor's Conference of the Southern Baptist Convention by Jimmy Scroggins, lead pastor of First Baptist Church of West Palm Beach.

The nomination will take place during the Southern Baptist Convention’s annual meeting next month in Baltimore.

In a statement issued by Scroggins, he highlighted Rice’s “rock-solid theologically” and the way his “faithfulness as a husband, father and grandfather testify to the strength of his character.”

Rice began serving at Calvary Baptist Church in 2004, and since then the congregation has experienced renewed health and significant growth. The church averages more than 3,500 people in attendance across two campuses, and is annually recognized as one of the leaders in missions giving and baptisms in the state of Florida.

John Sullivan, the executive director of the Florida Baptist Convention, is quoted in the statement as saying: “Dr. Willy Rice is a man of unquestioned integrity, unwavering commitment to scripture and an unapologetic leader. He is my friend.”

Added Scroggins: "I [also] believe that Southern Baptists from all walks of life will be challenged and encouraged by his leadership. I look forward to placing his name in nomination at our meeting in Baltimore.”
