Former ‘first lady’ of First Baptist Church Ocala dies in Virginia

Hilda Johnson, long-time first lady at First Baptist Church of Ocala, died May 21  in Newport News, Va.

Johnson was the wife of Ed Johnson, who served as pastor of First Ocala from 1983 to 2006, and as director of the Florida Baptist Convention’s Cooperative Program Department from 2006 until 2010. He also served as president of the Florida Baptist State Convention in 1992, and president of the state Board of Missions in 1999.


Hilda Johnson was the recipient of the 1999 Clyde Maguire Minister’s Wives Award, and served as president of the Florida Baptist Ministers’ Wives organization in 2005.


The Johnsons reside in Knoxville, Tenn. She was in her hometown of Newport News to take care of the belongings of her mother, who had died recently.


Ed Johnson is traveling to Newport News. Funeral Services for Hilda Johnson have been set for First Baptist Church of Ocala, Tuesday, May 27 at 11 a.m.; visitation will begin at 10 a.m.
