On Thanksgiving Day 2013 Philip and Jodi Gibson, a Jacksonville based couple and member of First Baptist Church Jacksonville, took their 6 year old son Stephen to the emergency room. They noticed Stephen was having trouble controlling the movement of his eye and wanted to figure out what was wrong.
A CAT scan was taken and they received news that every parent dreads- Stephen had a tumor on the base of his brain near the spinal cord, and was diagnosed with Brainstem Giloma, an aggressive and dangerous form of cancer that starts in the brain and can spread through the nervous system.
Doctors were able to remove 60% of the growth, but Philip has had to take a leave of absence from work to travel with Stephen to St. Jude’s in Memphis, Tennessee for more tests and surgeries.
