JACKSONVILLE (FBW)–In Surviving Storm Stress, author and Christian counselor Dwight Bain shares valuable insights in helping children deal with stress.
Parents must maintain a calm demeanor and continue to manage emotions and responsibilities effectively in a crisis situation, Bain wrote. If parents become “shellshocked” and lose priorities and control, children feel pressured and confused.
Bain also recommended parents divert children’s energy positively through drawing, talking, or involvement in a fundraising or volunteer activity.
“If you give them something to do to help, they can take positive action and sort through their emotions immediately,” according to Bain.
“High school age kids may try to act ‘cool’ about everything, but often are more scared about the changes, losses and confusion than any other group,” Bain wrote.
Older children often need more “reality” to help them open up, but once they begin to talk to family members it will be easier for them to handle stress in a family setting or outside of one, Bain assured parents.
