PANAMA CITY (FBW)—East Bay Baptist Church Pastor Ken Kalinich is heading up a team planning Beach Blaze at Panama City Beach April 5. Organizers hope the “mass evangelism” effort will become an annual youth gathering during the Spring Break season.
The line-up of Christian bands who have committed to perform include Outcast, saxophonist Chris Godber, Providence, The Burnin’ Bush, Since October, the Wedding, Fireflight, Seventh Day Slumber, KJ-52 and Judah Man. The groups, which span several music genres, will perform on the beach at Shoppes of Edgewater at Beckridge Road, beginning at 3 p.m.
Kalinich, pastor since 2002, and church member Will Weatherly, both admittedly novices in planning rock concerts, have worked 18 months on Beach Blaze, which they hope will reach the estimated 500,000 young adults who gravitate to the white sand beaches in March and April. Kalinich told Florida Baptist Witness he received “a vision from the Lord to do this from my first day here.”
“I asked myself ‘What is the church doing to minister to all of these kids who come here?’” he said. “We want to attract them by the music and then give them Jesus.”
On Sunday after the concert, organizers will host a 10 a.m. worship service on the beach property of Laguna Beach Christian Retreat, one of the sponsors of the event.
