JACKSONVILLE (FBC)—Florida Baptist volunteers injured while responding to hurricane relief needs in the Gulf Coast looked beyond their difficulties to encourage those that served with them.
“Their spirit and positive attitudes inspired us,” said Fritz Wilson, director of the Florida Baptist Convention’s Disaster Relief and Recovery Department. “The biggest disappointment of those injured was that they were not there to help the other volunteers.”

Torby Giles, a member of Wallace Baptist Church in Pace, and Lee Newton, a member of the First Baptist Church of Lynn Haven, each sustained a broken leg which required surgery to repair.
Giles’ leg was crushed by a log while performing cleanup and recovery jobs in Houma, La. Newton was injured unloading food service equipment in Texas City, Texas. Both are recovering “in good spirits,” reported Wilson.
Dehydration and heat forced the hospitalization of Fred Perrin in Texas City. Perrin and his wife, Mary, members of Suwannee River Baptist Church in Old Town, were serving meals at the time. Perrin is recovering in Houston.
“These volunteers were more concerned with the ministry work being done than with their own circumstances,” said Wilson. “This can be said of all of our volunteers.”
